BELGIAN LICENSE PLATES – FULL GUIDE

Belgian License Plates: Minimalism, Precision & Dual‑Format Design

Belgian license plates are among the most distinctive in Europe, defined by their unique burgundy‑wine characters on a clean white reflective background. Belgium is also one of the few EU countries where front and rear plates differ — the rear plate carries official markings that the front plate does not.

This guide explains the technical standards, color system, format variations, and the exact differences between front and rear Belgian plates, including the stylized “CV” mark found only on the rear plate.

Design Identity

Belgian plates combine minimalism with strong visual impact. The burgundy/wine‑colored characters (not bright red) create a refined contrast against the white background, giving the plates a premium, unmistakable aesthetic.

Color System

• Background: white reflective
• Characters: burgundy / wine‑red (official Belgian tone)
• EU band: blue with “B” country code

This color combination is exclusive to Belgium and does not appear in any other EU plate system.

Front vs Rear Plates (Key Differences)

Belgium uses a dual‑plate system, where the rear plate is the official government‑issued plate, and the front plate is a reproduction.

Rear Plate (Official Government‑Issued Plate)

The rear plate is the only legally issued plate and includes unique official elements:

• white reflective background
• burgundy characters
• embossed or printed serial
• official registration number
• standardized dimensions: 520 × 110 mm
• a stylized elliptical mark above the first hyphen containing the letters “CV”

The “CV” Elliptical Mark Explained

On the rear Belgian plate, above the first hyphen, there is a raised, stylized elliptical symbol containing the letters “CV.”

CV = circulation‑verkeer

• circulation (French) – road circulation / traffic
• verkeer (Dutch) – road traffic

This mark is an official Belgian homologation symbol, confirming that the plate was issued by the authorities and meets national standards.

Front plates NEVER include the CV mark. This is the most important visual difference between front and rear Belgian plates.

Front Plate (Replica Plate)

The front plate is not issued by the Belgian government. It is a replica created to match the rear plate’s number.

Key characteristics:

• same number as the rear plate
• same color system (white + burgundy)
• same dimensions: 520 × 110 mm
• no CV elliptical mark above the hyphen
• no official embossing
• used only for identification symmetry on the vehicle
